Jeremy Wheeler
City of London Police

Jeremy has been a diversity practitioner and discrimination law advisor for fifteen years. He currently works for the City of London Police. He is undertaking doctoral research into diversity training in the police and public services at City University, London, where he is a visiting lecturer. He has written and leads on a course for diversity trainers in the School of Social Sciences, City University.

Presentation: Jeremy believes that a central problem to diversity training has been that delegates end up more afraid of diversity issues than before they attended the training. Certainly in the police a culture of 'fear of saying the wrong thing' has led to staff seeing diversity as being about not doing things, rather than it being a dynamic issue that concerns everyone. He has developed a framework that encourages staff to see diversity as an issue of access and empowers them to contribute to the debate as to what are effective diversity solutions.
