As Director of the Centre for Applied Leadership Research at The Leadership Trust, Sharon researches, writes and presents new ideas in the field of leadership. Sharon’s current research focus is on Worldly Leadership - uncovering ancient and indigenous leadership wisdoms for a more sustainable world. This brings together scholars from around the world in studying ancient and indigenous leadership wisdoms that might help to address the complex challenges of today’s world. She is also interested in responsible leadership and leadership for sustainability. Previous major research projects have included the impact of organisational values programmes on middle managers, developing leadership in a new university, and how manufacturing leaders learn to lead.

Sharon has a PhD in Management, an MBA and is also a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and was recently elected as a Fellow of the RSA. She is a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Gloucestershire and Worcester, a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the University of Lancaster, and a Fellow at the University of Durham. She has also been Cycle Director of the International Masters Programme in Practicing Management, a global leadership programme.

She is co-author of Your MBA with Distinction: Developing a Systematic Approach to Succeeding in Your Business Degree published by FT Prentice Hall, co-editor of Critical Thinking in Human Resource Development published by Routledge, member of the editorial boards of the journals Human Resource Development Review and Advances in Developing Human Resources, and member of the management board of Human Resource Development International. She is also co-author of Stimulating Leaders: Developing Manufacturing Leadership Skills and was director of the research programme that led to the report; and director of The Trust’s leadership development programme for Sheffield Hallam University.

Prior to joining The Leadership Trust in 2003, she led MBA and executive programmes, taught, and researched at Lancaster University Management School for almost ten years, following a commercial career in HR and Management Development.
